Joseph Wong (Wong Chak)

Professor Joseph Wong is the second-generation author of “Old Master Q”, and the founder of OMQ Zmedia Ltd.

Joseph’s father, Alfonso Wong (1925~2017.1), is the original author of the famous Hong Kong comic “Old Master Q”. At the beginning of 1960, Alfonso created tens of thousands of comics under the pseudonym of his eldest son, Wong Chak, among which “Old Master Q” has been published and distributed until now. When Joseph saw his father getting old, he resolutely took over his father’s business and continued the creation of Old Master Q comics.

Joseph himself is a contemporary artist, and his works have been exhibited in various places and received considerable response. After replacing his father’s role, he even transformed the serial 4 frame comics that were only published in newspapers and magazines into a brand and entered Sotheby’s and Christie’s. The Old Master has thus changed from flat to three-dimensional, from the paper in your hand to become a star in reality, which you can touch and feel.

The artist’s early abstract paintings and recent creations of Old Master Q have been invited to art museums and galleries around the world, such as the series of acrylic paintings “Implication” is the creation of memory of his father. The face of the Old Master in the series is black, the artist stated that because black is not just black, but colorful. It is the sum of all colors. “Black is full of various colors. These colors include all the colors presented by my father in the paintings, which are also the colors of his wonderful life; although the face is not visible as it is only black at first glance, everything is already hidden inside in fact. I use this series of paintings to express the memory of my father.” The series of nine paintings were all sold out on the first day at Sotheby’s selling exhibition in 2018.

Joseph, who studied architecture, graduated from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in the United States. Since 1983, he has been teaching Architecture at the University of the Arts (Philadelphia) for more than ten years, during which he founded the graduate program in Architecture and served as its director. Engaged in architecture teaching for more than 30 years, retired from the Architecture Department of Shih Chien Univer-sity in 2016. During these years, he has been invited to give lectures, share architecture forums and exhibit at universities in Europe, the United States, and Asia.
