Cloud Atlas
"Tibet is a gift of my life, everyday I meditate when I walk under the blue sky and the slow-moving clouds, this experience has always been here to guide my own path, to control myself, to calm down, to slow down.” - Huang Wei
The exhibition features around 15 artworks of Huang Wei. For Huang, both folk landscapes in memento style and artworks in portrayal of Tibetan Buddha, could not satisfy his story and self-expression on Tibet. Although his experience in Tibet is not the only part of his life, at a critical moment, it would build a ‘Linka’ in his heart - a place where he has the ability to communicate with himself.
So as his mentor, Li Jin, wrote in an article, "Even though there are no similarities between Huang’s paintings and the traditional paintings from Han, I believe they share the same conception. Moreover, his works contain traditional painting techniques, which seem like an estrangement to our modern lives. On the other hand, the colors and patterns are apparently affected by contemporary art, which also make his work unique from Thangka."
